Building Strong Foundations for a Successful School Year

As the new school year begins, families across the DMV are adjusting to fresh routines, new teachers, and new expectations. Whether your child is entering Pre-K or preparing for middle school, September is the perfect time to check in on supports, goals, and next steps.
At EmpowerED Advocates, we’re here to walk alongside you, reminding you that you don’t have to navigate the school system alone.
🗂️ What to Focus On This Month
✅ Review Your Child’s IEP or 504 Plan
Now that school is underway, it's important to:
- Re-read your child’s goals and accommodations
- Ask teachers how supports are being implemented
- Check that services (speech, OT, pull-outs) have started
💬 Tip: If something feels off, you can request an IEP meeting at any time—don’t wait until progress reports come home.
📝 Get Organized
Create a folder (digital or paper) to track:
- Teacher notes & communication
- Work samples
- IEP meeting documents
- Service logs or progress reports
Having everything in one place will help you advocate clearly and document your concerns.
🧠 Watch for Early Signs
The first few weeks of school often reveal where your child may struggle.
Watch for:
- Anxiety about school or certain classes
- Refusing to go to school
- Trouble keeping up academically or socially
💡 If these show up, it may be time for an evaluation or early intervention conversation.
🗣️ A Note from EmpowerED Advocates
We’re already supporting families this fall with:
- IEP & 504 plan reviews
- School observations
- Early childhood evaluations
- Tutoring for students who need academic reinforcement
If you’re unsure what your child needs or how to speak up; you’re in the right place.

📅 September Dates to Remember
- Back-to-School Nights: Ask questions, introduce yourself to your child’s teacher, and share your perspective.
- No School: September 2 & September 23 (varies by district)
- Quarter 1 IEP Progress Checks: Should be coming mid-October—plan ahead.
💪 Let’s Start Strong—Together
Remember: advocacy doesn’t have to be loud, it just needs to be consistent.
You’re already doing the most important thing:
showing up for your child.
Wishing you a September filled with growth, connection, and confidence.
